Palmer, Hester win online photo contests grand prizes

Young Jackson Palmer earned the grand-prize win in the 2010-2011 Nikon Deer of the Year contest

Jackson Palmer and Jared Hester won the grand-prize round of the Nikon Deer of the Year and Trail Cam photo contests. The two MS-Sportsman.com users’ photos were chosen by the site’s users.

The two contest winners earned berths in the grand-prize round of voting by winning monthly contests.

Palmer, as grand prize winner of the Deer of the Year contest, will receive a prize package that includes a pair of Nikon binoculars, along with a $25 gift coupon to the Sportsman Outdoor store. Trail Cam Contest grand-prize winner Hester will receive a trail cam and a $25 gift coupon.

Palmer’s photo, which won the January monthly contest, shows a great 7-point he killed in Lauderdale County on New Year’s Eve took the Nikon Deer of the Year contest. The image garnered 49 percent of the votes cast in the contest.

The buck was the 10-year-old’s first deer, and he had sacrificed to make it happen.

He “passed up does all season long because he wanted his first deer to be a racked buck,” his entry reads.

Just behind him was Daniel Smith’s “Lauren’s 1st Deer,” which was the December monthly winner and earned 48 percent of the votes.

Lauren Smith, shown in the photo, has Down’s syndrome and “dust-rolled” a 6-point while hunting with brother Daniel.

“Who says Down’s syndrome is a handicap?” Daniel Smith wrote in his entry.

As runner-up in the finals, Smith wins a $15 gift coupon to the Sportsman Outdoor store.

In the Trail Cam Contest, Hester took the lion’s share of the votes. His “Hit List” earned 49 percent of the votes cast in the contest.

Hester will receive a trail cam and a $25 gift coupon to the Sportsman Outdoor Store.

The winning picture was of a monster buck with at least 11 points that was captured in Lamar County before the season began. The image was in the finals after winning the September round of monthly voting.

“Can’t wait for opening day,” Hester wrote.

There has been no word on whether or not the hunter finally connected with the big animal.

In second place was a trail cam image of Justin Bankston’s 170-inch 10-point from October. Bankston, whose photo won the January monthly voting session, killed the deer in December.

His image garnered 32 percent of the votes cast in the contest.

Bankston wins a $15 Outdoor Store coupon for being the runner up in the finals voting session.
