Eugene Cronley of Brandon caught a 131-pound blue catfish on April 7, 2022 from the Mississippi River, setting the new state record for the species.

Cronley was fishing near Natchez when he caught the fish, which shattered the previous Mississippi state record by 36 pounds. That fish, a 95-pounder, was also caught near Natchez on the Mississippi River in 2009 by Dakota Hinson.

The Mississippi Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks certified Cronley’s fish as the new state record on April 11.

Cronley caught the fish on a circle hook using skipjack herring as bait. He said it took him about 40 minutes to land the record fish.

“It is truly a fish of a lifetime,” Cronley said.
