Crappie Masters National Championship

Scheduled for the first week of October, Columbus Lake’s bounty of crappie have deemed it the location for this year’s Crappie Masters National Championship tournament.

During the week of Oct. 1–6 the population of the Columbus area will increase substantially, as more than 200 boats from 21 states will converge on the area to compete in the 2012 Crappie Masters National Championship tournament.

Following several days of pre-fishing, a crappie-fishing seminar, captain’s meeting and a kid’s fishing rodeo, the two-day tournament will take place on Oct. 5-6.

Crappie Masters president Paul Alpers indicated this choice of venue for the prestigious National Championship was at the request of many of the competitors.

“We like to go to places where there are lots of fish to catch and lots of places to catch fish,” Alperssaid. “We were here back in the spring for a one-day event, and it was a great competition.

“The hospitality here is great, the convention bureau has been phenomenal to work with and we are expecting to see another great competition as we crown our national champion for 2012.”

Anglers, who must previously quality to compete in the event, will fish the area from Armory Lock and Dam to the north to Tom Bevill Lock and Dam to the south — over 58 miles of the Tenn-Tom Waterway including Aberdeen, Columbus and Aliceville reservoirs.

“We expect to see a lot of trollers tight-lining the lakes and sloughs and old river runs, but it’s also a great place to one-pole fish around all the stumps and timber in the area,” Alpers said. “And I wouldn’t count out some guys who will be long-lining here; that’s really starting to get popular.”

The top 12 qualifiers from each of the Crappie Masters state events, along with some selected winners of affiliate club tournaments, will be competing for the highest payouts in the crappie-tournament industry.

The National Championship will award over $175,000 in cash and prizes, including two brand-new Nitro boats courtesy of Bass Pro Shops.
