Summer grass no problem for spring fishermen

Summertime grass can be a problem at Trace Lake, but park ranger Jeff Rosamond says bream fishermen should have no problems with it during April.

Trace State Park Lake has had a little problem with grass during July and August the last four years, but Park Ranger Jeff Rosamond says that bream anglers headed to the lake during April and May don’t have to worry about any grass getting in their way.

“When the water temperature heats up and stays up, we get some grass,” he said. “And because our lake is so clear, the sun gets to penetrate down there, and man, it just grows. But early in the year, we don’t have a big problem with it.”

The only thing that might get in the way of bream fishermen during April and May might be some algae blooms that make spotting bream on the beds a little more difficult. But even that won’t matter too much as long as you can see the craters.

“In April, those beds will be established, and you’ll be able to tell where they are,” Rosamond said. “So even if grass was growing then, it wouldn’t grow in the middle of the beds where the fish have been fanning.”
