Kayak and catfish at Museum of Natural Science; Fishing 101 for kids at Biloxi Boat show
As Mississippi’s hunting seasons begin to wind down, attention begins shifting more toward fishing.
Two events are scheduled to help set the mood for anglers, both young and old.
* On Feb. 4, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson will conduct its annual “So You Think You Can Fish” event beginning at 9 a.m. at the Museum off Riverside Drive. The event will feature seminars on the growing sport of kayak fishing from 9 to 10:30 a.m., as well as one on all phases of fishing for catfish, including noodling, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Featured on the kayak panel will be:
* Angelia Webb, owner of Pearl River Kayak and an avid kayak angler.
* Chris Wallace, a recreational kayak angler who fishes Barnett Reservoir regularly.
* Kayak bass tournament anglers Brad Case and Dwayne Walley.
* Tom Holman, a fisheries biologist with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and also an avid kayak angler.
They will discuss and answer questions about all phases of kayak fishing, from boat design and equipment to shallow water strategies.
The catfish panel includes several tournament fishermen, and a veteran handgrabber:
* David Shipman, the 2010 Cabela’s King Kat Champion on the Tenn-Tom Waterway, and his fishing partner Brook Wilkins, the Bass Pro Shop Female Catfish Angler of the Year in 2013.
* Bob Crosby, who operates Bluecat Guide Service for giant Mississippi River catfish.
* Dwain Brister of the Mississippi Handgrabbers Association.
* Mark Porter, a handgrabber who conducts tournaments.
* Woodie Reeves, veteran handgrabber and one of Mississippi’s best known and versatile outdoorsmen.
* MDWFP’s Don Henke, another handgrabber.
Other fishing-related events will be included at the Museum, including interactive fish feeding at the numerous aquariums. The event is free but normal Museum admission fees will be required.
Saltwater seminar
On Feb. 11, as part of the Biloxi Boat Show at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Highway 90, a free seminar called “Fishing 101” will be held at 1 p.m. for children. The first 50 children will receive a free rod and reel courtesy of Shakespeare, plus other tackle.
Charter captains Ronnie Daniels of Fisher-Man Guide Service in Bay St. Louis, Clay Necaise of OutKast Guide Service in Bay St. Louis, and John Falterman of Therapy Guide Service in Slidell, La., will head the seminar.
The Biloxi Boat Show hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday (Feb., 10), 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $8 for everyone over the age of 13; 12 and under get in free with an adult ticket purchase.
