MDMR enforces federal red snapper regulations despite Gov. Bryant’s call for regional management of fishery.
While Louisiana enforcement officials have said they will not enforce federal red snapper fishing regulations, it was made clear this weekend that Mississippi Department of Marine Resources’ Marine Patrol are onboard with the feds — despite their own governor signing an open letter to Congress demanding state management of the fishery.
On April 27-28, MDMR Marine Patrol officers issued citations to 11 people on four boats for possession of red snapper during a closed season and over the daily bag limit in federal waters.
The citations were turned over to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of General Counsel.

MDMR Marine Patrol Officers Will Freeman and Leo DeGeorge were working under the Joint Enforcement Agreement (JEA) with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an agreement MDMR has with NOAA to provide law enforcement of federal regulations in both state and federal waters.
