Gator-hunting application process begins

Prospective alligator hunters have a week to get their applications for the 2014 alligator-hunting season that begins at the end of August.

Prospective hunters have one week to apply for 920 permits

Within a minute after midnight early Monday morning, hopeful alligator hunters hit the web hoping to snag permits for Mississippi’s 2014 public lands hunt.

“Got it done by 12:15 a.m.,” Elizabeth Ratcliff of Canton posted on her Facebook page. “Hopefully Team Gatorslayer pulls a few permits.”

And by noon on Monday, alligator program coordinator Ricky Flynt, of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, was popping jokes about the public’s inability to comprehend the rules.

“And the parade of idiots begin,” wrote Flynt, who earlier said “it is important the people read all the rules and regulations and what is involved before applying.”

The application period for the Aug. 29-Sept. 8 season opened at 12:01 a.m. Monday and will end at midnight Monday June 9. Traffic should be brisk, with a total of 920 permits for the seven zones in the statewide.

Applications can only be made online.

There is no application fee required, but it is limited to Mississippi residents over the age of 16. They must be licensed, either hunting, fishing or a combination, or exempt.
