Hunts will be allowed during the first two dove seasons
Hunters have six fields to choose from — four in the North zone and two in the South — for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks’ 2014 Private Land Dove Program.
Fields will be open during the first two dove seasons only, with hunting allowed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning at noon. The North Zone’s first two seasons are Sept. 1-Sept. 21 and Oct. 4-Nov. 9. The South Zone’s first two seasons are Sept. 13-21 and Oct. 4-Nov. 9.
Kemper, Panola, Prentiss and Rankin counties each have one field in the North, while South fields are located in Jones and Pearl River counties. Prices are $100 per stand for all but the Kemper field, which is $105. The number of stands varies by field.
Permits can only be purchased online. To order and to see all the rules, regulations, maps and field information, visit https://store.mdwfp.com/dovefields/Availablity.aspx.
Apply for Barnett Rez hunts
Applications are now being accepted for the special permitted archery deer hunts on Pearl River Valley Water Supply District lands around Ross Barnett Reservoir in Jackson. The hunts will take place throughout the state’s regular Hill Country archery season Oct. 1-Jan. 31.
Two zones exist below the Spillway — Madison and Rankin counties — with permits costing $300. Three zones exist on the north shore of Pelahatchie Bay — east, central and west — with permits costing $200. It costs nothing to apply.
All hunts are four-day hunts, beginning at sunrise Thursday morning and ending at sunset Sunday, with the exception of the final weekend when the hunt is Wednesday through Saturday.
Each permit carries a limit of one buck and two antlerless deer. Legal bucks are defined as those having either a 15-inch inside spread or an 18-inch main beam. A permit holder can take a hunting partner along for the hunt, and each can carry a bow and take deer. They must remain within the boundaries of the zone for which the permit is valid.
