It may still be summer, but Mississippi’s fall officially begins with fast-action dove hunts on warm September afternoons. Dove hunting is an excellent opportunity to introduce youth to hunting and shooting sports and the social atmosphere of the sport.
The MDWFP seeks to provide an avenue for that experience with dove hunts on two of its Wildlife Management Areas, at Black Prairie WMA on Sept. 1 and at Mahannah WMA on Sept. 13.
These hunts are open to all youth 15 years of age and younger. A parent or guardian over 21 years of age must accompany each youth hunter during the entire hunt. Youth hunters must check in the day of the hunt at 11 a.m. The hunt will begin at 2 p.m. and conclude at sunset.
Special events during the day of the hunt will include skeet shooting, safety discussions by MDWFP law enforcement officers and a free lunch.
Participants must register online to attend these hunts. Applications will be accepted from Aug. 1-Aug. 25. The Black Prairie hunt will be limited to 50 youths, and the Mahannah hunt will be limited to 100 youths.
