Mark McPhail guide to becoming a good turkey hunter

McPhail harvested these gobblers in Nebraska near the North Platte River.

1. Patience: You’ve got to have patience to turkey hunt.

2. Woodsmanship: You’ve got to be a good woodsman.

3. Get outdoors: You must get outside and into the woods every chance you get.

4. Hunting location: You must have a good place to hunt in order to kill turkeys.

5. Respect: Respect the land and landowner.

6. Know the terrain: You must know the lay of the land.

7. Learn how to talk turkey: Turkey calling is only about 20 percent of the equation, but you need to know how to call, what to say and when to say it.

8. Master one type of call first and then add more to your repertoire as you learn.
