Mark McPhail on safety

Safety in the woods is paramount during the turkey season when hunters are fully camouflaged.

“If I even think I hear a person calling to me like a turkey, I’ll pull out my owl hooter or crow call and blow on them awhile to let them know I’m here to keep from getting shot,” McPhail said. “I’ve had people come in on me calling like a turkey three times in the last three years, and I’ve scared them off and heard them leave all three times. I’d rather scare off a bird than to get shot or shoot somebody.

“If I’m hunting a particular area and get to my hunting location and see another hunter parked there, I’ll keep on going. Turkey hunting can be very dangerous, and I want to be as safe as possible. It’s just not worth having an accident.”
