Columnist thins his hog herd with No. 4 turkey shot
MS-Sportsman.com columnist Dan McKinzey set out for a turkey hunting trip March 27, but came home without the gobbler he hoped. He didn’t head home empty handed, though.
“I got me a hog while turkey hunting this morning,” McKinzey said.
The kill came after he spent some time on his lease listening for gobbling turkeys. He heard a bird come off the roost, but finally gave up and started easing along a ridge.
“I was just working my way down these ridges along one of the roads, and … I could hear something up ahead,” he said. “I could hear a little something up ahead, so I looked up thinking it was a turkey.
“I looked up ahead and saw one hog – looked a bunch of little babies.”
McKinzey eased around the hogs and finally got a shot with No. 4 turkey loads, and put one of the animals on the ground.
