Yep! It’s the yelp

What is the call maker’s favorite call?

“I’m tempted to say whatever works,” said Meek, “but I guess if I had to choose one call to make all the time it would be a yelp. You can call up and kill more gobblers with just a plain yelp than by making any other call.”

Although Meek makes a variety of wooden calls he’s always going to have a box call and pot call with him.

“You can call up most turkeys by using a box and slate together,” said Meek. He uses the box call to get his call out there for long distances and then he’ll switch to a slate for quieter contented calls when the birds get closer.

“Right now I’d say the Copper Pot call is the hottest thing going for me,” Meek said. “You can get raspy sounds by playing it about an inch from the sides and high notes and kee-kees by playing close to the edge.”

Whatever the hunter’s preference, Meek offers sage advice to call up and kill a turkey.

“Master a call before you go to the woods and then call sparingly,” he said. “You don’t hear the turkeys walking through the woods calling constantly and loud. Once you master a call get out in the woods and go hunting, because you can’t kill them at the house.”
