Youth Participation Initiative deadline approaching, MDWFP announces

Mississippi groups wanting to help recruit youth into hunting and fishing have until Aug. 15 to apply for funding from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the agency reported.

2011-12 Youth Participation Initiative Program announced

Organizations interested in helping involve more youth in the outdoor sports can begin applying to participate in the state’s Youth Participation Initiative Program beginning July 1, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced.

Reward offered in golden eagle shooting

A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who shot golden eagle near Iuka that was discovered in April, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced today (June 15).

The eagle, which survived and is undergoing rehabilitation at the Jackson Zoo, was discovered in the Burnsville community near County Road 306 and Tishomingo County on April 7, and an investigation by state and federal officials has revealed the eagle was shot between March 15 and April 7. […]

Deer Island wildfires highlight burn ban

Coastal Mississippi is currently under extreme drought conditions. After two recent wildfires on Deer Island, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is reminding the public that Harrison and Jackson counties along the coast have a burn ban in effect that prohibits any outdoor burning, including campfires.

Although there is no proof either of the Deer Island fires was caused by people, both fires started in areas frequented by boaters and campers. […]

Alligators and snakes among wildlife displaced by Mississippi River flooding

The rising levels of the Mississippi River and its tributaries will disperse alligators, snakes and other wildlife to new locations, and residents should be prepared for encounters, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks said today (May 18).
