Hinds County hunter kills 150-inch deer while hunting near Utica.

Often a hunter that has just collected a huge-trophy class buck comments that it was their “buck of a lifetime.” And Mona Owens was no different when she laid out a huge deer the day after Thanksgiving.

“This has been my dream to take a big buck,” the Hinds County hunter said. “I haven’t stopped smiling yet since the shot was taken. I am sure this is my once-in-a-lifetime deer-hunting experience, but I truly am thankful that I had this opportunity.”The deer she left the woods with has been greenscored at more than 150 inches Boone & Crockett.

The kill came only after a lot of time spent in the stand.

“I’ve always been a country girl. I grew up on a farm, so I have been around hunters and hunting all my life,” Owens said. “I didn’t really get into deer hunting, though, until after I got married to my husband, Bucky.

“Now I love to spend time with him hunting in his stand, but I am also confident enough to hunt on my own now’”

Owens was hunting on private land in Copiah County, targeting a cutover, the day after Thanksgiving.

“My husband and the landowner opened up a lane leading to an open area,” she explained. “My husband had already hunted the stand a couple times, spotting a good buck. He alerted me to a good 8-point working the area.”

She climbed into the stand about 3 p.m. that day, and didn’t have to wait long before the first deer arrived.

“By 4:30 (p.m.), a couple does came out into the open and fed almost until dark,” Owens said. “It was getting late, so I was gathering up my gear with the idea of getting down out of the stand.

“I glanced up and out of nowhere stood a buck not 30 yards from the stand.”

Her adrenal glands kicked into high gear.

“I knew it was a good buck, but I wasn’t sure how big,” Owens said. “Without really thinking, I raised my 7mm-08 to check out the buck through the scope, and automatically nailed him with one shot.  There was no recovery time, he dropped in his tracks.”

She wasn’t the first one to check out her kill, however.

“Within minutes, my husband showed up on his ATV after hearing the shot,” she said. “I pointed at the buck on the ground and he immediately inspected it, letting me know it was not the 8-point he had been seeing. It was rather a much bigger 12-point

“I was completely shocked. I quickly sent my brother-in-law and his son a text with the message: “BUCK DOWN.”

The 210-pound buck was greenscored at 152 ⅞ inches.
