One of those bucks that only comes along once in a lifetime as they say, happened by 8-year-old third grader Griffin Dulaney of South Jackson on Nov. 29 at 5:25 in the evening.
Dulaney patiently waited the buck out, and is now waiting on the drying period to get a final Boone & Crockett score.
“We have been seeing this deer on a camera several hundred yards away from the field where he was eventually killed,” dad Bill Dulaney said. “On the day the buck was taken, we got into the shooting house around 3 p.m. A little after 4 (p.m.) several does came out into the field to feed then left. Griffin was getting a little bored and edgy.
“By 5:10, I asked Griffin if he was ready to go home, but he wanted to stick it out. A few minutes later I glassed a buck coming into the field through a field road gap and Griffin got his 7 mm-08 rifle up and ready. Then the buck stepped behind a hay bale roll.”
While the pair waited for the buck to reappear, Bill Dulaney spotted a larger buck stepping into the same field.
“I told Griffin to get on the second deer and shoot, but he wanted to wait until the buck stepped broadside for a good shot,” the elder Dulaney said. “About five minutes later the shot came at 100 yards. The buck dropped in his tracks.”
The younger Dulaney said there was a good reason to delay the shot.
“I finally asked Griffin why it took him so long to make the shot,” Bill Dulaney said. “He replied that he was praying to the Good Lord to help him quit shaking.”
The 11-pointer came with a 19-inch inside spread and main beams of 24 5/8 inches.
