Voting begins for Deer of the Year, Trail Cam contests

Daniel Smith's "Laurne's 1st Deer," is one of the three choices in the December edition of the Nikon Deer of the Year contest.

It’s time for MS-Sportsman.com users to decide the best photos entered in the December edition of the Nikon Deer of the Year and the Trail Cam contests. Voting will continue through Jan. 5, with winners in each contest announced Jan. 6.

Monthly winners will move on to the final voting session scheduled for next month, when the overall contest winners will be decided.

In the latest Nikon Deer of the Year contest, users can choose from three images that include a pending massive 192-inch Walthall County buck.

Dwight Shaffer, aka “Walthall slayer,” killed the 18-point Dec. 2 after his father-in-law saw the buck a few days earlier.

“He is the best deer I have taken so far in my life,” wrote Shaffer in a major understatement.

The deer netted a green score of 192 4/8 Boone & Crockett. Click here to read the full story of the trophy buck.

Patrick Norman Jr., or “Big P” as he’s known on MS-Sportsman.com, entered a photo of a big 12-point titled “Big Nasty.”

“I have been hunting the deer since I got him on camera last year (2009),” Norman said. “The only problem was that all of the pics were at night.

“We decided to put (a) camera up in a different location this year and, what do you know, there he is in the daytime.”

Users also can vote for “Lauren’s 1st Deer” entered by Daniel Smith, or “spearchunker77” as he’s known on the reports forum.

“Who says (D)own’s syndrome is a handicap?” Smith asked in his entry. “I took my sister, (L)auren hunting on Jan. 20 and she dust-rolled this 6-point with a .243!

“All that target practice paid off. It’s not a Booner, but it’s on top of our trophy list.”

In the Trail Cam contest, photos of three bucks are in the lineup. Click here to see the choices and vote for your favorite.

Spany10012, known to his family and friends as Scott Manning, checked his camera after a showfall and found a photo of an 8-point sneaking past the photo site.

“Looks like he may have some snow his back but a woman on his mind!” Manning wrote of the Tishomingo County deer.

Landon Cutrer’s “Rib Cage” buck also is included in the contest.

“I put my camera overlooking a scrape on an old logging road,” said Cutrer, who is known as “Blue goat” on the site. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the buck that checked the scrape.

“His tines are so long, it looks like he has a rib cage on his head, hence the name ‘Rib Cage.’”

The final choice is a Duane Gray’s “Reflections,” showing a great buck wading across an out-of-state creek.

A final monthly round of voting will be held Feb. 1 to allow users to choose winners from photos entered this month, and the Grand Prize voting session featuring all monthly winners will take place immediately thereafter.

Anyone can enter the Nikon Deer of the Year and Trail Cam contests, but only registered users of MS-Sportsman.com are eligible for the voting sessions and prizes. Click here if you’re not already registered to get started today!
