Best lures for Long Creek bass

Seale catches a bass over a moss-filled flat.

“For some reason, Long Creek fishes like a pond, and the bass scatter out all across the grass and bury up in it during the hot part of the day,” angler Eric Seale said. “Early in the day I’ll use a chugger-style topwater lure that spits and sputters in a walk-the-dog pattern over the grass beds.

“Another favorite lure to use early when the grass is growing towards the surface and still expanding is a swim jig with a Zoom Ultra Vibe trailer. It\’s a different look than the spinnerbaits that most people throw, but it has the vibration or throb that really seems to sneak up on the bass, and they attack it with a fury.

“When the water\’s up over the grass or you have pads, I\’ll take a little square-bill crankbait and run it right through that stuff. I prefer a KVD 1.5 in chartreuse/yellow or chartreuse/black back. The KVD or Strike King crankbait is my go-to shallow-water crankbait when I\’m searching for bass.

“Another lure I really like to fish is a Rapala DT 4 when you have the stalk-type grass. If I can find (that vegetation) with water on top, then I\’ll bring that lure just across the top of it and tic the strands and get a lot of reaction bites.

“During the summer I\’ll also use a Rat-L-Trap, and work it over and through the grass and rip it out when it gets too deep or buries up in it. And many times I\’ll get a bite when I rip it out of the grass. I\’ll use a chrome/blue back or a chrome/black back. When the bass come up schooling over the shallow grass and weed filled flats, I\’ll fan cast the area and pick up bass almost anywhere you find the grass. The bass really like that Rat-L-Trap.”
