Side-imaging a boon for smallmouth anglers

Smallmouth bass share the same water as their large-mouth cousins during late summer.

Roger Stegall is a professional angler in every sense of the word, using every means at his disposal to locate fish and catch them — whether it is for a tournament purse or a paying client.

One of the tools he praises is his Hummingbird side-imaging SONAR.

“The first time I looked at the images I was blown away,” Stegall said. “In one location, I knew there was some structure holding fish, I knew the depth and could see the structure with a conventional depth finder.

“The side-imaging allowed me a much clearer picture; the structure was a couple of sunken sailboats — and you could see the masts and everything. I was ecstatic. The world beneath the surface is no longer a big question mark.”
