Smallmouth bass a pleasant Bay Springs Lake surprise

Roger Stegall shows that anglers fishing for spots at Bay Springs are sometimes surprised by smallmouth bass.

Bay Springs Lake doesn’t harbor very many secrets when it comes to the spotted bass fishing, but Iuka bass pro and guide Roger Stegall said it might surprise some anglers to learn that they have a good chance of catching a smallmouth bass on some of the same baits they throw for spots.

“There have been a good many smallmouth bass over the years brought back to Bay Springs for tournament weigh-ins,” Stegall said. “Those fish are released into the lake after they are weighed in.”

Since many of the smallmouth brought back to Bay Springs from Pickwick run in the 3- to 4-pound range at the time of release, Stegall said there are some 6- and 7-pound smallies out there that are apt to bite at any time.

Although conditions in Bay Springs Lake are conducive for smallmouth growing larger, they aren’t conducive for them to reproduce.

“There’s no current or running water, so they don’t seem to do as well in Bay Springs as they do in the Tennessee River,” Stegall explained. “So they’re there and they grow, but they don’t repopulate very much.”
