Artificial offerings look like real worms

Danny Burgess caught this craggy rock channel cat while fishing for spawning catfish with Phil King.

One of the things that kids probably love most about catching catfish is pinching a big night crawler in half. While this gory little chore spurs their imaginations, most of us have something better to do than continually wipe worm guts off our hands.

If you’re ready to fish for catfish without the mess, there are several alternatives for you to try. However, most of them are just as messy as a live night crawler.

However, two Berkley offerings that attract just as many catfish as a regular old night crawler have made it easier than ever to catch a mess of catfish without all the mess.

“Live or natural bait can be replaced,” said John Prochnow with Berkley Bait Development. “We have proven that with the Berkley Gulp! Shad Guts and the 2-inch Floating Pinched Crawlers.

“These natural-looking baits entice fish to bite by combining Gulp! scent with natural-looking appeal.”

If shad guts aren’t your thing, take a look at the Pinched Crawlers, which look just like the half of a night crawler that just squished worm gunk all over your fingers. And when you get done with it, all you’ve got to do to recharge it is toss it back into the container rather than letting it bake in the sun.
