MDWFP announced that it will reopen a popular — and soon to be even more so — fishing hole near Aberdeen. Closed in 2014, 99-acre Lake Monroe in Monroe County will have two opening dates in June.
* On Saturday, June 3, a youth fishing day will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., open only to children aged 15 and under. Each child must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old and has a valid Mississippi fishing license.
* On Wednesday, June 7, the lake will open to the general public at 6 a.m.
MDWFP fisheries director Larry Pugh, who served many years as the Northeast Region fisheries biologist, loves the lake and expects great things.
“Our surveys show the lake will have an outstanding bass population,” he said. “It’s going to be like all the lakes that go through the renovation and restocking process; it’s going to be crazy good for a while.”
To protect the largemouth, MDWFP has placed a slot limit on Lake Monroe that requires all fish measuring between 14 and 22 inches must be immediately released. The daily creel limit will be 10 bass per day, with only one exceeding 22 inches.
“The slot limit will protect the initial stocking of bass and allow them to reach their trophy potential,” said Trevor Knight, the current Northeast Region biologist.
The daily creel limits for other fish are 20 crappie, 100 bream and 10 catfish. Although stocked with walleye, all must be released.
