Start shallow, finish deep

While he typically targets trout just under the surface, Cuevas puts his anglers on redfish by having them fish the bottom.

Recreational anglers looking for the most action during July should fish south of the Highway 90 Bridge at the mouth of Back Bay first thing in the morning, according to Capt. Bryan Cuevas with Mega-Bite Fishing Charters.

“The reason I say to fish there is because you can look at any GPS and see the places that have oysters marked,” Cuevas pointed out. “Any of those marked spots are good places to throw a topwater for just about anything that swims: Spanish mackerel, sharks, speckled trout, white trout and reds.”

After the early morning topwater bite dies down, Cuevas recommended moving to the deeper holes because the water temperature climbs fairly high during the daytime.

“Find a hole around the edge of the channels in the bay,” he advised. “The channels are marked with your typical red and green markers. That’s where your fish will be later in the day, and that’s the time to break out the Carolina rigs.”

Following this plan of action from morning to noon will put you in the best position to catch a mixed bag of fish that will keep your filet knife busy on into the afternoon.
