The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) and its partners will host a field day for private landowners interested in learning more about the benefits of longleaf pine on May 10. The event will be held at a private property in Lawrence County near Silver Creek, Mississippi. Topics will include management of longleaf pine, economic and wildlife benefits, cost-share programs and more. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with lunch provided for field day participants.
Longleaf pine is native to the southern half of Mississippi, and is an attractive option for landowners due to its disease and pest resistance, ability to withstand storms and high winds, high-quality wood, and aesthetic value. The open, park-like conditions of longleaf stands that may be promoted with frequent prescribed burning make it an excellent choice for landowners interested in wildlife management.
“Well-managed longleaf stands can provide quality habitat for wildlife such as bobwhite quail, wild turkey, white-tailed deer and many non-game animals,” said Tamara Campbell, Longleaf Delivery Specialist for the MDWFP Private Lands Habitat Program. “These benefits to wildlife, along with the specialty lumber products derived from longleaf, and the availability of cost-share programs for establishment, makes longleaf pine a wise investment for many landowners.”
Anyone interested in learning more about longleaf pine are encouraged to attend; however, participants are asked to register prior to May 1. Registration is $5.
