Mississippi alligator-hunting season applications now available

Alligator hunting applications will be accepted from June 1-15 for those interested in hunting during the 2011 alligator season in the Pearl River Zone near the Ross Barnett Reservoir and the Pascagoula River Zone in Jackson County.

Applications may be purchased from any location selling Mississippi hunting and fishing licenses, on-line or by calling 800.5GO.HUNT.

Applicants must be residents of Mississippi and at least 16 years of age.  Applicants may only apply for one hunt in each zone.

Also, applications will be accepted from June 1-July 1 for private-lands alligator-hunting vouchers in the following counties; Adams, Attala, Bolivar, Carroll, Claiborne, Copiah, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Jefferson, Lawrence, Leake, Leflore, Madison, Marion, Pearl River, Rankin, Simpson, Sharkey, Sunflower, Washington, Wilkinson, and Yazoo.

Private lands within these counties must contain at least 20 acres of privately owned surface water to qualify for an alligator harvest voucher. Each property is limited to one application, and all private-land applications require special documentation and the landowner’s permission.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks requires that everyone selected for alligator-hunting permits must attend an alligator-hunting training course.

All applications cost $5, plus applicable processing fees.
