Late-season wet weather best time to run deer dogs

Courtney Bennett used her knowledge that running bucks go to the water to try to throw dogs to kill this buck during a recent dog hunt.

Kenny Shiyou and Bubba Bennett are going to start dog hunting just as soon as the season opens during November, but they don’t really expect it to get cranking until the last week of dog season.

“Our first dog season opens on the 17th of November and runs to the first of December,” Shiyou said. “Then we have two weeks of primitive weapon and then a week of rifle. Dog season always opens back up on Dec. 24 and runs to the middle of January. This year it’s Jan. 16.”

A lot of vacation gets pulled during that last week of dog season during January because that is when the rut is just staring to kick into high gear.

Since deer are not as cautious, and are more willing to get up and move around in the colder weather, Shiyou and Bennett have found that it’s a lot easier to find bucks during the last five days.

“Cold, damp conditions are the best for running dogs,” Bennett said. “The dogs can pick up the scent better than when it’s hot and dry.

“And since the bucks are rutting, the dogs can smell them better and we’ve got a better chance of getting on a buck than a doe.”
