The right goose-hunting shot

Geese spend most of the summer around water, where Avery Outdoors pro-staffer Dwayne Padgett splits half of his time scouting them out.

With all the preparation that goes into scouting birds, securing permission to hunt an area and then creating a hospitable spread, the last thing you want to do is come under-gunned. Grenada resident and Lakeway Archery owner Jason Golding’s advice is to leave the duck loads at home and bring out the heavy artillery.

“Not to say you can’t kill them with 3-inch (ammo), but I recommend 3 ½-inch shells — anything from size BB to T,” he said. “Some guys bring those No. 2s that they’ve got left over from duck season; not saying you can’t knock some geese down with them, but you really want something at least the weight of a BB or bigger — BBs, triple BBs, or Ts.

“I also prefer either improved or modified chokes. And the law requires the shot to be steel or other non-toxic shot.”
