No changes to deer-hunting season anticipated in wake of Mississippi River flooding

The massive flooding of the Delta by the Mississippi River will not change the 2011-12 deer season, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced yesterday (June 7).

“While the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks has the authority to close hunting seasons in emergency situations, closure of deer seasons in the Delta has not been recommended by (MDWFP) Deer Program biologists and is not currently under consideration,” the MDWFP news release read. […]

MDWFP reopen flooded areas in four Delta counties to fishing

Under the authority of Executive Order 1053, issued by Governor Haley Barbour during the first part of May 2011, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is opening the waters listed below to recreational boating and fishing:

Deer Island wildfires highlight burn ban

Coastal Mississippi is currently under extreme drought conditions. After two recent wildfires on Deer Island, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is reminding the public that Harrison and Jackson counties along the coast have a burn ban in effect that prohibits any outdoor burning, including campfires.

Although there is no proof either of the Deer Island fires was caused by people, both fires started in areas frequented by boaters and campers. […]
