Daniel Smith won the December edition of the Nikon Deer of the Year contest with this photo of sister Lauren, who killed this 6-point in Yalobusha County.

Daniel Smith and Landon Cutrer won the December installments of the Nikon Deer of the Year and the Trail Cam contests. Each of the MS-Sportsman.com users will receive a Sportsman prize package and move on to the final-round voting scheduled for February.

In the Nikon Deer of the Year contest, Smith (spearchunker77) easily took the top honors with 74 percent of the total votes cast with a photo of his sister Lauren with a 6-point killed in Yalobusha County.

“Who says Down’s syndrome is a handicap!” Smith wrote. “It’s not a booner-but its on top of our trophy list!”

In second was Patrick Norman Jr. (“Big P”) with an image of a big 12-point dubbed “Big Nasty” that gained 22 percent of the votes.

“I have been hunting this deer since I got him on camera last year (2009),” Norman wrote. “The only problem was that all of the pics were at night.

“We decided to put a camera up in a different location this year, and what do you know, there was he was in the daytime. Played the wind and got there early. He never knew I was there.”

Dwight Shaffer (walthall slayer) was in third with 4 percent of the votes. Shaffer’s photo showed a 192-inch Lamar County behemoth killed on Dec. 2.

“He is 18 points with 9 points on each side, (and) he green scored 192 4/8,” Shaffer wrote. “He is the best deer I have taken so far in my life.”

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the buck that checked the scrape,” Cutrer wrote. “His tines are so long, it looks like he has a rib cage on his head, hence the name ‘Rib Cage.’”

With 20 percent of the vote, Duane Gray (roughneck3) came in second for a beautiful image of a huge 8-point wading across a creek.

The final 5 percent of votes went to Scott Manning (spanky10012) with a photo of a buck walking through the show in Tishomingo County.
