Elvis Presley Lake

Joe Horn of Terry doesn’t allow a physical impairment to deter his fishing prowess. Here a friend boats a bass for him on Calling Panther.

Lake Record: 8.45 pounds

Slot Limit: none

Daily Creel Limit: 30

If you’re looking to load up on eating bass, Elvis Presley Lake just minutes from Tupelo is the place you want to go.

That’s because the lake has millions of small bass, according to bait shop owner and angler Clay Coleman.

“There’s never a problem catching small bass there,” Coleman said. “The 3- and 4-pounders are where the catching gets a little trickier.

“There are some bigger bass in the lake, but they are more difficult to find. The bigger bass like finesse baits and a slower presentation.”

According to Coleman, the lake level has been lowered in the winter to deal with a grass problem in the shallows, but by summer the grass will be back.

He said the morning and evening topwater bite is nothing short of phenomenal.

“In the grass, frogs do really well, as do lizards of just about any color,” Coleman said. “As you come off the grass and get deeper, square-lipped crankbaits are really hot, especially in the panfish colors. Silver-and-blue Rat-L-Traps and shaky heads are widely used, as well.

“If you have ever wanted to play with an umbrella rig, this is a good lake for it.”

Keeping a mess of bass from Elvis Presley Lake will have anglers asking for another hunk-a-hunk of fried bass filets. Thank you; thank you very much!
