Top gear for Bee Lake bass

The tournament angler holds a bass he caught just after noon. Bates said once the sun gets up high in the hot summer, you can catch awesome strings of bass by flipping the grass.

Terry Bates said he’s most conscious of which rods to use when he’s fishing visible cover.

“You can use whatever rod length you’re comfortable with fishing in open water, but if I’m fishing in tight quarters in the cypress trees with limited space, I like to use a 6-foot medium-heavy rod for spinnerbaits and a 5 ½- to 6-foot rod for topwater lures.”
