Make your own ‘natural’ bait

Cut shrimp is a good bait for catfish letting the bait drop near the bottom.

Most catfish, buffalo and carp fishermen have used packaged dough balls bought from local bait shops, but, after spending a lot of money, they’ve learned to make these fish tasty treats on their own. Here is a simple recipe to cook your own homemade dough ball baits.

* Mix 1 cup flour, 1 cup yellow cornmeal and 1 teaspoon sugar in a bowl.

* Using a one quart container of water, pour just enough into the bowl mix to create a heavy dough.

* Form the dough into half-inch to 1-inch balls.

* Mix the remaining water with 1 cup of molasses and pour into a pan.

* You may add a flavoring of choice like garlic, gelatin flavors (strawberry, cherry, etc. …) or anise.

* Heat the pan on the stove with the molasses mixture to a boil.

* While the mixture is boiling, add the dough balls but don’t let them stick together.

* Cook the dough balls in the molasses mix for 2-3 minutes.

* Allow the “cooked” flavored dough balls to fully cool before using.

Catfish stink bait

If this next recipe seems gross, it’s because it is. Catfish, especially channel catfish, like stinky food and their sense of smell is keen. Here is how to make up a jar of stinkbait for catfishing. Handle with care when putting on a fishing hook.

* Fill a jar with cut up pieces of junk fish like shad, mullet, or whatever you have.

* Cover the jar with the lid, but leave the lid loose so gasses can escape.

* Put the jar in direct sunlight for a couple days.

* Be prepared once you open the lid, because the result will define stinkbait.
