Lures that make crappie bite

A crappie with the ever popular Roadrunner lure that is deadly on Okatibbee Lake and other similar impoundments in the spring.

T.J. Stallings is an experienced angler who also happens to combine his love of fishing with his job. Stallings is with Roadrunner Lures, and specializes in marketing and designing product and packaging.

He’s an avid fisherman, but his forte is crappie fishing and designing lures that will catch them better anywhere, anytime.

“My favorite way to crappie fish is to cast for them using lightweight equipment and jigs, spinners — and Road Runners, especially,” Stallings said. “When the crappie are up in the shallow water around stumps, I’ll drive the Road Runner around the stumps and stickups, and work each area until I locate (the fish).

“Once I establish a pattern and what lure and color they want, I’ll really work the area over.”

During one trip Stallings was catching them on four out of five casts.

Stallings also likes to take a 1/16-ounce Crappie Thunder — the company’s most-popular lure — with the pro-series head in chartreuse or white, depending upon the water color, and pick those succulent fillets off of the stumps. That’s also their most popular lure.

And there are plenty of stump fields in Okatibbee Lake to work Stallings’ favorite pattern.
