Packing accessories for a float trip

A dry-box or bag will hold a lot of water-sensitive gear you’ll want on your float.

Just as the name implies, a dry bag is a storage device where items you’d rather not get soaked can make the trip. Within the bag can be another dry box, for the true essentials. And, of course, there is the ice chest.

While everyone will have differing needs, this is a list of the items I generally include.

The dry box

Cell phone, wallet, medicine and car keys.

The dry bag

The dry box, camera, GPS, binoculars, toilet paper, sunscreen, bug spray, butane lighter, ThermoCell, first aid kit, a few storage bags (quart and gallon), cooking kit (if lunch is in the plan), lightweight rain parka, extra baseball cap, hand sanitizer, lip balm, flashlight, hoodie, depending on the season, snacks such as nabs, cookies or energy bars.

The ice chest

It is important to pre-cool the chest with ice, and I use water filled quart milk cartons from the freezer. Then I carry ice in zip-storage bags.

Other items include bottled water, soft drinks, energy drinks or whatever suits your palate; lunch or snacks that are best kept cool.
