Striped bass and hybrid striped bass are counted together, with an aggregate limit of six per fishermen allowed each day. There is a 15-inch minimum length limit on both.
Both are a very fragile species, at all ages.
“They fight so hard that they have a rapid build-up of lactic acid that they just can’t handle,”MDWFP’s Ron Garavelli said. “If you fight one for long and then add the stress of handling the fish before releasing, the survival rate is very small. They will not live long even in the best of livewells, either — especially in June, July, August and September.”
If you are going to keep fish to eat, take a large ice chest that will hold as many limits as you have fishermen and put them directly on ice.
If you are going to release fish, then consider mashing or clipping the barbs to make it easy to shake off a fish without boating it.
