Many of the surface schools you find in late May or early June will be the fish stocked the previous year, and they will not have reached the legal size limit of 15 inches.
If you can’t find bigger fish to test your regular gear, you can still have a blast with the smaller fish that average 11 to 13 inches. Just make sure you clip the barbs on your lures.
I use a B&M 7-foot spinning rod designed for crappie fishing and the lightest high-quality spinning reel I can find, and spool it with 4-pound monofilament line. It will cast a 1/8-ounce jig head and 2-inch grub 20 yards. This is also a good rig for a micro-spinnerbait or something like a Roadrunner.
