Eat: Stoke your morning burner

Save the traditional ham, eggs and bacon breakfast for after the hunt, eating a healthy, core-warming bowl of oatmeal with fruit that will get through the hunt.

Why is it that deer hunters tend to break all the rational rules about eating right during the hunting season? Everybody knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet deer hunters seem to forget that.

Yeah, we know, a big part of the fun of deer hunting is deer camp. That includes the fellowship, hunting together with friends and family, and fixing big deer camp meals to enjoy once all the hunters are back in camp.

Our camp is in on that too.

But is it smart? Does it insure we’re ready for a morning hunt? No.

So how about we do the right thing for breakfast. That way, we’re not listening to our stomach’s growl by mid-morning when the deer hunting just starts to crank up. How many hunters do you know that quit early so they can get back to camp to eat brunch/lunch? Plenty of them do it in my camp.

Let’s listen to an expert, who right off the bat suggests skipping the donuts, honey-buns, cookies and chocolate milk for something more nutritious and warmer in the belly to start the hunting day off right.

“Start with a heaping bowl of oatmeal,” recommends Sally Porter, a culinary arts instructor at Hinds Community College in Jackson. “It can even be the instant kind that you mix up quick with water or milk and zap in the microwave oven.

“But don’t stop there. Add some fruit, berries, some honey, a teaspoon of brown sugar, a pat of butter, and or a dollop swirl of maple syrup to spike up the flavor. You’ll need and want the carbohydrates for a long sit on the stand.”

So, to start the hunting day out right, skip the high fructose sugars and give your stomach something good to work with. That way, you can stay on the stand longer and still have your sausage, eggs, and biscuits when you get back for a brunch with the rest of the camp members.
