Wind can be cool for hot weather hunting

When it’s hot, you’re going to sweat, which means scent control is mandatory for a deer hunter. The market is loaded with options, from direct body sprays to soaps and laundry detergent.

Wind or even a light breeze can be a contentious factor when deer hunting. A breeze wafting through the woods or across a food plot can ruin a hunt in a matter of seconds if not played right by the hunter. However, there are ways to downplay the impact of a breeze if hunters follow some simple scent control practices.

Hunters must be proponents of scent control, making sure they pay attention to wind direction and strength when picking their hunting stands for their morning or afternoon hunts.

That said, hunting on a breezy day is one way to stay cool.

With modern scent control products and some practical sense about reducing human scent impact on the wildlife habitat, there are no reasons to avoid hunting on windy days.

“I am a bow hunter and that means hunting in October when it is usually hot,” said Mike Summerlin of Jackson. “Given a whitetail’s nose is its most powerful tool, I want to avoid being busted for my scent above all else. However, with limited time to hunt, I don’t want to miss any open opportunity just because the wind is blowing in my hunting area, plus I find a little breeze makes the hot weather hunting more bearable.

“So, I wash my clothes in scent killer laundry detergent, pack them in a scentless bag, and then spray down completely with an odor eliminator. I’ll take a cool breeze on the stand any day.”
