Scenic opportunities

This boat ramp, on the west side of the Highway 80 bridge near Chunky, will accommodate a small trailer. The river is best floated in a kayak or canoe.

While not offering a put in or take out, Dunns Falls is located on the lower end of the Chunky. The site sits on a high bluff and is the replica of a grist mill that once was on the site.

Old bridges, some nearing a century in age, span the river. Anglers who wish to keep track of their float progress can log the coordinates into a GPS for reference.

The Chunky has a number of access points where floaters may enter and take out. These vary from crude paths beneath a bridge to concrete boat ramps. This writer likes to put in near the town of Chunky, where U. S. Highway 80 crosses the river.

The river’s water clarity is very good. Naturally, it gets more stained following rains in the area, but clears quickly. There are places where the bottom is sand or mud, but the majority of the river bed is limestone.
