Destination Cat Island

Wade fishing is popular along island waters.

Cat Island of Long Beach and southeast of Bay St. Louis is a top fishing destination in the Gulf region.

Cat Island is one of the barrier islands off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The island is well known for its population of raccoons that the Spanish explorers originally thought were cats, thus the name given to the island.

The speck of land is a T-shaped island created by mixed currents from the Gulf of Mexico.

The island is roughly eight miles from the Mississippi Coast, and is about five miles long east to west, with the east beach being about three and a half miles long.

The western end of the island is part of the National Park Service. Most of the rest of the island is privately owned, including the eastern beach purchased by BP Oil in 2011.

In 2005, the southern tip of the island was wiped out by Hurricane Katrina.

Anglers taking advantage of island waters will find ample areas for boat fishing, wade fishing, floundering and even the use of kayaks.
