Gear for COE hunting

Hunters wanting to hunt Corps of Engineers lands should choose gear that is both highly functional and easy to transport.

Hunters going after deer or ducks on Corps of Engineers reservoir lands need to recognize that the hunting environment on these properties is way different than hunting on private land.

First and foremost is the potential for running into numerous hunters pursuing the same game and prime hunting spots. This translates into increased hunting pressure on both the game and the hunters.

“Hunters wanting to hunt Corps of Engineers lands successfully need to plan to abandon their ATVs opting for a lightweight pack-in to the more remote corners of the property,” longtime Enid Reservoir deer and duck hunter Tommy Hoff advised.

This requires critical consideration of the proper gear that is both highly functional and as easy as possible to transport to a pre-selected hunting spot.

Here is Hoff’s list of potential gear items to have on hand to carry in or leave behind as needed for each specific hunting venture:

• Muck boots or leathers with Gore-Tex

• Raingear in camo

• An easy-carry lightweight rifle, bow, duck gun, muzzleloader, or hunting handgun

• Mechanix gripping gloves in new Mossy Oak patterns or hunter orange

• Goose down vest or wool sweater (under the rain jacket)

• Small daypack or fanny pack.

• Portable climbing stand with body safety harness

• Lightweight popup ground blind

• Half a dozen decoys for mallards in carry bag

• Hip waders, just in case

• Flashlight

• Day gear: ammo, snacks, water, compass, knife

• Drag sled or skid for toting gear
