The gobbler was sounding off in earnest, and he was not that far away. I started slipping quietly down the ridge, just below its peak where I hoped I would not be seen.
There were several more gobbles so I decided to halt my movement, set up and do some light calling.
I no sooner settled against a big oak tree with my pop up turkey blind in front, when I heard a hen call. It didn’t sound quite right, so I issued one of my own. The gobbler answered neither one of them.
Just then, not 40 yards down the ridge from me a human form stood up, cussed, and walked off down the hill. We were busted.
This situation is typical for hunting on public lands.
