The right camo

Muddy Water Camo out of Madison has exploded on the national waterfowl hunting scene.

What could be a more-natural surrounding sitting out in a flooded field duck hunting blind than water, mud, cattails and corn stalks? That’s what Steve Maloney thought after duck hunting in marshes and flooded fields for 30 years.

“If you’re hunting waterfowl, shouldn’t your camo include water?” Maloney said. “After all, they don’t call it dryfowl.”

That lead to the launching of a business.

“After three decades of searching for camouflage that looked like the marshes where I hunted, I finally decided that if I wanted realistic camo with water in the pattern I’d just have to make it myself,” Maloney said.

The result of all his work and experimentation became Muddy Water Camo, a photographic camouflage created outdoors where hunting happens.

To assist in developing the most-realistic waterfowl-specific camouflage on the market today, Maloney sought out wildlife photographer Steve Kirkpatrick. Four years, 1,059 photographs, and 103 pattern drafts and redrafts later, Muddy Water Camo (www.muddywatercamo.com ) is now hitting the marshes and the retail sales markets all over the country. In Mississippi alone there are 15 dealers already signed up stocking Muddy Water Camo clothing and gear.
