Tombigbee’s Smithville Pool receives 40,000 bass fingerlings

Officials recently poured about 40,000 largemouth bass fingerlings into the Smithville Pool of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway to help bolster the healthy population already found there, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks said today (July 6).

The 3-inch bass were provided by the Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery near Tupelo, and were surplus fish the hatchery had not planned to stock anywhere else. […]

Arkansas angler wins Grenada Lake BFL

Arkansas’ Jeff Johnston put a limit of bass weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces in the boat June 25 to win the Bass Fishing League stop on Grenada Lake. Mississippi’s Roger Stegall was just less than a pound back in the BFL event.

Johnston said he was fishing shallow in Turkey Creek, flipping Havoc plastics on a black-and-blue jig to catch his tournament-winning stringer and pocket the $3,842 top check. […]

Reward offered in golden eagle shooting

A $2,500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who shot golden eagle near Iuka that was discovered in April, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced today (June 15).

The eagle, which survived and is undergoing rehabilitation at the Jackson Zoo, was discovered in the Burnsville community near County Road 306 and Tishomingo County on April 7, and an investigation by state and federal officials has revealed the eagle was shot between March 15 and April 7. […]

BFL tournament scheduled for Pickwick Lake

The Bass Fishing League will stop at Pickwick Lake out of Iuka on June 4 for the third of five stops in the circuit’s Mississippi Division. The lake will be flooded with as many as 400 boaters and co-anglers for the event.

“Lower Pickwick is typically all off-shore ledge fishing,” FLW pro Jonathan Newton of Alabama said. “The spawn was pretty late this year so the fish are just starting to move out, and they have been pretty slow moving to deeper water.

“There are still a few bass that will be shallow, but I would target schooling fish in about 12-14 feet of water.” […]
