Arrest made in killing of Amite County black bear

An unidentified suspect has been arrested in the killing of a tagged black bear in Amite County after the alleged shooter confessed, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks said Monday (Jan. 9).

The investigation began Dec. 19 after MDWFP received an anonymous call reporting a bear had been killed in the Busy Corner community. The agency worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to work the case. […]

iPhones, iPads now fully compatible with forums

Photos can now be posted to the MS-Sportsman.com forum directly from iPhones and iPads by using the free third-party app CliqCliq QuickPic.

“We’ve been working hard to find a way to make Apple mobile devices fully compatible with our forums, and our IT staff has finally worked out all the bugs,” the site’s Andy Crawford said. “Now our many iPhone users can upload photos right from their boats and hunting leases!” […]

Free shorebird expedition to Grand Bay Reserve offered

A free expedition to Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve near Moss Point is being offered on Nov. 12, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced today (Nov. 3).

The tour, which begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m., will feature ornithologists who will discuss overwintering waterfowl, wading birds and other shorebirds, the MDMR said. […]

Mississippi Coastal Cleanup nets 2,064 bags of trash

Nearly 3,000 volunteers picked up 2,064 bags of trash along 158 miles of the Mississippi coast on Saturday (Oct. 15) as part of the 23rd Mississippi Coastal Cleanup, the Division of Marine Resources announced.

More than 120,000 pounds of trash was bagged in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties during the event, which was part of the International Coastal Cleanup – the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment. […]

Sharing outdoor experiences with other sportsmen is now a breeze for Android users, who can upload photos to the MS-Sportsman.com reports forum right from their mobile devices.

“Now you can snap a photo of that big deer, a buddy with a lunker bass or a table full of crappie and instantly upload it to the reports forum – just like you would from your computer,” MS-Sportsman.com’s Andy Crawford said. “Of course, you also can add photos to classifieds now.” […]

Bill to protect hunting, fishing on federal lands introduced in Congress

A bill introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives will, if approved, ensure that recreational fishing, hunting and shooting sports will be recognized as public activities on federal lands, the American Sportfishing Association announced.

The Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act, introduced by Representatives Dan Benishek (R-MI) and Dan Boren (D-OK), was introduced Sept. 2 and directs federal land-management agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to apply the multi-use mandates in their management plans to support public access to our nation’s public lands.
